The 5 Biggest Obstacles to Getting off the Couch, Solved!

Problem #4: "I don't have the time."

By Cathy Moxley

Problem #4: I don't have the time. It's easy to feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Solution. At the risk of oversimplifying, we all make time for the things that we make time for. Period. Once you decide to elevate exercise a few notches higher on the priority list, it's time to rethink some of the other things that are eating away at your time. Consolidating your errands is one way to save loads of time. Marie, a stay-at-home-mother of three, says, "I rely on one-stop shopping whenever possible to give me a little more time in my day. With three kids in tow, I avoid multiple stops whenever possible!" Delegation is another idea. If you have school-age kids, it might be time to dole out a few more chores to them, such as folding their own laundry or unloading the dishwasher. You might also want to trade childcare with a neighbor or friend to give each of you one free morning per week.

It also helps to keep in mind the reasons why you've decided to place a higher priority on fitness. You are more likely to keep making time for exercise if those reasons are close to your heart. Try sitting down and really thinking about what would be compelling for you. What jumps out? Do you want to be a good role model for your kids? Be better able to participate in active adventures as a family? Ward off a family history of diabetes? Once you've made your list, keep it somewhere that you'll see it often - in your day planner, on the fridge, or maybe the bathroom mirror. Keeping a visual reminder will help keep your exercise routine a top priority!
