Here's a suggestion for what to put in your shopping bag when you're at the market -- and what you can whip up with it at home!
What to buy: Fresh sage
Why get it: Sage is an easy-to-find herb with a velvety texture and an astringent but warm flavor. It has a delightful and definitive zing factor, so a little goes a long way.
Goes well with: Sage pairs beautifully with roasted meats and poultry, winter squash, apples, potatoes, cabbage, and cheeses.
What to make with sage:
- Make a rub for lean pork chops with a little chopped fresh sage, salt and pepper, then just grill or broil the meat.
- Add a tablespoon or two of minced sage to your traditional apple pie for a fragrant and unexpected touch.
- Give your regular tea an herbal infusion. Add a few sage leaves to your mug along with your tea bag then pour hot water over the brew and steep it for a few minutes.
Did you know?
The word sage is derived from the Latin word meaning health.
