Is That Really a Healthy Snack?

Yogurt & Smoothies

Yogurt & Smoothies

Plain yogurt, without tons of added sugar, can be a healthy snack. Unfortunately, yogurt has been turned into a candied concoction of milk, high fructose corn syrup, and food coloring.

Yogurt smoothies aren't any better. A true smoothie made with ground ice, juice, plain yogurt, and blended fresh fruit is a great portable breakfast or afternoon snack. But the fruit smoothies aimed at kids often contain enough calories, in the form of sugar, to comprise an entire toddler meal. Parents should put store-bought smoothies in the same nutritional category as a milkshake—dessert—and make healthier smoothies at home with fresh ingredients.
