Q. Hi there, Doctor! Lately my young baby boy is spitting up an awful lot after every meal. It's just started in the last couple days or so, and the difference is quite noticeable. Sometimes it gets to the point where he's throwing up a little after meals, and his sleeping habits have been affected.

Any information you might have would be very helpful, thanks!

A. I wish I knew how old your son is; if he's less than three months and really throwing up forcefully, see your pediatrician. If it's more like frequent 'spit-ups' that dribble out of his mouth or nose, he's probably having some reflux. Keeping him upright for 20 minutes after eating allows gravity to help keep stomach contents in the stomach, as does not jostling him when his belly is full. Some docs believe that thickening bottles (if he's bottle-fed) with a little rice cereal helps, others don't believe this (personally, I'm a non-believer).

If it gets very frequent, make sure he's still gaining weight. Children who are still gaining usually do well and outgrow the reflux in time.
